We grow sandersonia flowers and tubers for export. We are located in Matakohe, Northland, New Zealand, which has a semi- subtropical climate.  Our flowers have been exported to Japan, Holland, Italy, USA, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and other countries. However most of our tubers and flowers go to Japan.

This is inside our chiller where we store our sandersonia tubers and cut flowers ready for packing. There are some of our calla flowers in the background.
The cartons are filled with sandersonia flowers ready to be sent off for export.

Growers of Sandersonia Flowers and Tubers

We started growing flowers commercially on a part time basis in 1994. At that time we were both teaching principals in small country primary schools.
Initially we grew a lot of different flowers while we built up our sandersonia and calla lily tuber numbers. We tried delphiniums, larkspur, statice sinuata, celosia, stock, sunflowers, trachelium, cosmos, ornamental kale and calendula.
Our flower growing is now a full -time operation which also requires extra casual labour during busy times. We are still expanding and this year expect to produce around 120 000 sandersonia flower stems as well as grow on plants for tuber production. We have decided to stop growing callas to concentrate on the sandersonia.

We enjoy growing things and also grow most of our own vegetables and are developing a home orchard. We have 18 acres of land and so we also keep calves, steers and heifers for home meat and extra income.
